How to protect your dog from the sun

Sun exposure will affect dogs in different ways depending on your dog’s coat and skin type. No matter what your dog’s physiology is like, it’s important to make sure they stay safe in the sun and limit exposure to prevent sunburn or heatstroke.

Sun cream for dogs

If your dog has large areas of exposed skin, or patches of pink skin, you may need to apply sun cream to these areas to prevent sunburn. You can buy special sun cream for dogs, or sensitive sun cream for babies can also be used. Before applying the sun cream liberally, test it on a small patch of your dog’s skin to make sure they do not develop a rash.

Your dog’s coat

If you normally shave areas of your dog’s coat, avoid doing this in sunny weather. Your dog’s coat can protect their skin from harmful rays. However, you should continue to brush your dog’s coat to remove loose fur, which will help to keep them cooler.

Dog walks

When you take your dog for a walk, do so in the early morning or evening to avoid the hottest part of the day when the sun is at its strongest. Woodland walks offer plenty of shade, providing extra protection from the sun.

Provide shade

When your dog is exploring the garden, make sure there is plenty of shade so that they can seek shelter from the sun. When you’re out and about, try to avoid places with little shade, at least during the hottest parts of the day.

Swimming

If your dog likes to swim, this can cool them off when the weather is hot but remember that sun cream will wear off more quickly in the water. Re-apply sun cream when your dog gets out of the water. At the beach where there is little to no shade, set up a play tent or gazebo so that your dog can shelter after going for a dip.
