Looking after older dogs

As dogs get older, their needs start to change. Older dogs may require a bit more care and attention to ensure they stay happy and healthy.

Maintaining a healthy weight

Older dogs still need exercise but they may not move around as much as they used to. Therefore, older dogs can be more prone to put on weight. Senior dog food is available to help older dogs maintain a healthy weight.

In addition to weight gain, keep an eye out for weight loss in your dog, as this could be a sign of illness. Older dogs are more prone to illnesses so it’s important to keep a close eye on their health and take them to the vet if you suspect they might be unwell.

Exercise for older dogs

To ensure your dog still gets plenty of exercise, take him for short walks regularly. Long walks might be a struggle for him, particularly if he has joint problems. Joint problems should be brought to the attention of your vet as treatment may be required. Give your older dog an Animo activity and behavior monitor so that you can keep track of how much your dog is exercising and set daily activity goals so that your dog doesn't exercise too much. Animo records your dog's sleep quality. Too much exercise can affect your dog's sleep, so you can use Animo to find the right level of exercise that has the most minimal impact on their sleep.

Grooming older dogs

Grooming shouldn’t stop as your dog gets older but you should be gentler with your technique. An older dog’s skin can be more sensitive and prone to scabs or lumps and bumps.

Dental health

Older dogs are more prone to dental problems. If your dog has trouble eating, then this could be a sign that it’s time for a dental check-up.

Regular check ups

Take your dog for annual vet check-ups or even every six months so that any issues can be picked up quickly. With a bit of extra attention, older dogs can lead happy, healthy lives.
