What is feline diabetes?
Feline diabetes, or diabetes mellitus, is caused by a lack of insulin in the cat’s body, or if any insulin is present, it isn’t being used properly. A lack of or inefficient supply of insulin leads to sugar in the blood, which gets passed through the cat’s urine. A cat will have an increased thirst. Other symptoms of feline diabetes include increased urination, an increase in appetite and weight loss, even though the cat might be eating more.
How is feline diabetes treated?
In addition to insulin injections, diabetic cats should have a closely monitored diet. If the cat is overweight, they will need a diet that will help to reduce their weight. Their food should be kept separate from other pets in the home, so that their progress can be closely monitored.
