Learn how Helen manages her cat’s diabetic diet

Helen’s rural household isn’t the peaceful idyll you might expect of a house in the country. She has no children, but she does have a very large pet family! She has six cats, and one of her cats, Mishka, is diabetic.

What is feline diabetes?

Feline diabetes, or diabetes mellitus, is caused by a lack of insulin in the cat’s body, or if any insulin is present, it isn’t being used properly. A lack of or inefficient supply of insulin leads to sugar in the blood, which gets passed through the cat’s urine. A cat will have an increased thirst. Other symptoms of feline diabetes include increased urination, an increase in appetite and weight loss, even though the cat might be eating more.

How is feline diabetes treated?

In addition to insulin injections, diabetic cats should have a closely monitored diet. If the cat is overweight, they will need a diet that will help to reduce their weight.  Their food should be kept separate from other pets in the home, so that their progress can be closely monitored.

Why did Helen purchase a SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder?

Helen is using a SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder to keep Mishka’s food away from her other cats. With no other cats eating Mishka’s food, Helen can now monitor how much she is eating and keep her diabetes under control.

How is SureFeed being used to control Mishka’s diabetes?

Helen says: “It’s brilliant. Mishka likes to eat little bits at a time. The other cats were always stealing his food but now he can eat as and when he wants and nobody can get in and steal it. The feeder does exactly what I want and he took to it straightaway. I love the feeder and so does Mishka - he can now eat his food anytime he likes in peace!”
