It’s important to groom your dog to keep his coat in tip top condition. Grooming not only removes loose fur, but removes dirt as well.

If you groom your dog at home, this also gives you the opportunity to bond with him. You might like to hire a professional groomer though, especially if you want to get your dog’s fur clipped as well as washed and brushed.

Finding a professional dog groomer

If you decide to take your dog to a professional groomer, it’s important to find a groomer that is right for your dog. Ask your vet if they know a groomer in the local area that they would recommend or speak to friends and family with dogs. If you see a dog in the park with a nice ‘do’, don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with their owner!

Before booking your dog into a grooming salon, visit the premises so you can meet the groomer and inspect the interior. You could even take your dog to meet the groomer before making an appointment to ensure your dog feels happy in their company. Take a close look at the equipment they will be using. Equipment should have certificates that prove it has been recently serviced.

Your dog must be vaccinated before visiting a grooming salon. If the groomer does not ask about your dog’s vaccinations, this could be a sign that they are not a reputable organisation.

It’s not a requirement for a groomer to have qualifications, but if they do have qualifications, it’s sure to be a good sign that they are passionate about what they do. Awards also indicate a groomer’s ability to do a good job and if the groomer has had experience with your breed of dog that’s a plus.

If your dog has allergies, sensitive skin or has a nervous disposition, be sure to let the groomer know so that they can take the necessary precautions.
