Feeding cats wet food and how to keep it moist

In the wild, cats get a lot of their water from the small animals they eat. In a domestic setting, if cats are only fed dry food, it can be difficult to ensure they get enough water. So feeding your cat a wet food or a combination of wet and dry food will benefit your pet.

Benefits of wet food

Wet food is also particularly beneficial to cats that require plenty of water for illnesses such as diabetes or kidney disease. Ensuring cats get enough water can also reduce urinary crystals from forming.

Graze feeding

Cats like to graze on their food rather than being fed set meals at certain times of the day. This can make it tricky for you, especially if you are out of the house for much of the day.

Food temperature

To start, feed wet food at room temperature; cats don’t like food if it is too hot or too cold. Once wet food is put down, it can be difficult to stop it drying out throughout the day, especially when the weather is warm. Serving your cats wet food in a SureFeed Sealed Pet Bowl will ensure it stays fresh throughout the day. A Sealed Pet Bowl locks in 99.8% of moisture in a 12-hour period*, so you can leave it out for your cat to graze on without it going stale.

The SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder and the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect both also have this sealing quality.

Access to fresh water

To further help with your cat’s water intake, make sure they have access to plenty of fresh water and don’t serve it directly next to your cat’s food. Many cats don’t like drinking water near to their food source.

Veterinary advice

If you have any concerns on how to feed your cat, speak to your vet for advice. Getting your cat’s food right will ensure they lead a happy healthy lifestyle.
