How to wash your dog

Daily walks will mean that most dogs get mucky from time to time and will need to be washed. Follow our top tips to ensure the process runs smoothly.

Start early

Introducing your dog to bath time at a young age will help them get used to the process when they’re impressionable. Make bath time fun by allowing your dog to play with toys whilst they’re being bathed and offer them a treat if they demonstrate good behaviour. This will ensure they associate bath time with positive experiences.

Dog shampoo

Different dog breeds have different coats and will require shampoo suited to their fur type. Speak to a professional groomer or vet for advice on the type of shampoo you will need. Medicated shampoos are available for dogs with skin conditions. Never use human shampoo on your dog.

Bathing location

Depending on the size of your dog, you could choose to bathe your dog in a sink, shower, bath or even the back garden. You may wish to try a few different locations to discover where your dog feels most comfortable.

Bathing equipment

A handheld shower head is your most useful tool when washing your dog as it allows you to rinse your dog all over. Your dog might find your bath or shower floor slippery. A towel or mat placed inside will give your dog something to grip onto.

Water temperature

Make sure the water isn’t too hot as a dog’s skin is easily scalded. If you choose to bathe your dog in the garden with a hose, make sure the water isn’t too cold and only do this on warm days so your dog doesn’t get cold.

Drying your pooch

Towel drying your dog and letting them air dry could be sufficient. If you wish to blow dry your dog, only use a human hairdryer on a cold setting as the hot setting will be too hot. Or you could invest in a pet hairdryer that is specially designed for dogs.
