How to weigh your cat's food accurately

Weighing your cat’s food will ensure they are not overfed, which can cause weight problems such as obesity and weight-related illnesses like feline diabetes and heart conditions. Here we take a look at how you can weigh your cat’s food so that they get the right portion size every time.

Measuring cups

Many pet owners that feed their cats dry food may use a measuring cup to determine the portion size. However, this is not always accurate, especially if the owner is in a rush and doesn’t pay close attention to how much food they’re putting in the measuring cup each time.

A series of 12 studies looked at how accurate measuring cups are. In all 12 studies, they found that the food served in measuring cups resulted in inaccurate portion sizes.

Another problem with measuring cups is that using them with wet cat food would prove to be quite messy, so an alternative means of weighing the food would be required.

Weighing scales

Measuring your cat’s food using weighing scales is a more effective way of ensuring you are feeding your cat the right amount of food. Digital weighing scales are more accurate than traditional weighing scales. But weighing your cat’s food in this way can become a bit of a chore when you have to do it every day, two or three times a day.

SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect

If you want the most convenient and accurate means of weighing your cat’s food, the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect has the answer. This feeder has integrated weighing scales, enabling you to accurately weigh your cat’s food easily every time you fill the bowl.

The Microchip Pet Feeder Connect links to the Sure Petcare app. Using the app, you can set your cat’s portion size and then every time you fill the bowl, LEDs light up and flash when the right weight has been reached. Therefore, you are able to weigh your cat’s food accurately with very little extra effort.

Determining the right portion weight

The amount of food that a cat should be fed will be determined by their age, activity levels and if they have any medical conditions or weight problems. If you are unsure about how much you should be feeding your cat, speak to your vet for advice.
