How to keep your dog in tip top condition

Crufts, the world’s greatest dog event, is just around the corner. Run by the Kennel Club, the show has been celebrating happy, healthy dogs for well over a hundred years. Dogs attending Crufts need to be in tip top condition, but it’s true to say that all dogs should be kept in good condition to ensure their health and happiness.

So, what can you do to make sure your dog is worthy of gracing an arena at Crufts?

Brush your dog’s coat

Daily brushing will remove loose fur and keep your dog’s coat glossy. Invest in a dog brush that is well suited to your dog’s type and length of fur. You may want to try a few different brushes to find one that works best.

Bathe your dog

Only bathe your dog as often as they need it as too much washing can dry out their skin. Some dogs will need more regular baths than others if they tend to get mucky. Never wash your dog with human shampoo; use shampoo specifically designed for dogs. If your dog has a skin condition they could benefit from a medicated dog shampoo.

Check your dog’s nails

Many dogs’ nails will wear down naturally, but if they don’t, you’ll need to clip them to avoid them getting too long, which can cause discomfort. If you’re unsure about how to clip your dog’s nails, ask your vet for advice. Invest in good quality nail clippers and ask your vet to show you how to use them properly.

Exercise your dog

Your dog needs daily exercise to keep them happy and healthy and to prevent obesity. Daily walks are essential, but why not try enrolling your dog on an agility course and see how their time compares with the agility dogs at Crufts? Getting creative with your dog’s exercise regime will keep them and you entertained. Give your dog an Animo activity and behaviour monitor so that you can keep track of how much exercise your dog is getting.

Train your dog

Training is important to ensure that the relationship between you and your dog well balanced. Your dog should find the training process enjoyable too. Simple commands will keep them safe, for example telling them to sit before crossing the road. Why not get creative with your dog’s training and try heelwork to music like the dogs at Crufts? Training can be just as fun as playing. Using food treats to reward your dog could cause weight issues so consider clicker training your dog instead.
