Senior deaf and blind dog uses Microchip Pet Feeder

Darren adopted Gracie, a 20+ year old Chihuahua, Gracie from Animal Care Services in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, November 1, 2018. She is blind and deaf and has no trouble using the Microchip Pet Feeder to have exclusive access to her food.

Darren, can you tell us a bit more about Gracie?

Gracie the dog eating from Microchip Pet FeederWe believe that Gracie’s life prior to my adopting her was horrible. It appears that she’s been made to live in a very small kennel for most, if not all, of her life. She’s at least 20 years. Understandably, she sleeps a lot. When she wakes up, she starts walking in endless circles. We think that this is a by-product of her long-term confinement. She does her business and then continues to walk in circles, frequently walking through her waste. When I’m home, I have a motion sensor monitoring her, to eliminate or minimise the amount of time she spends walking through her waste. She goes to her feeder on her own and eats whenever she wants to. She can only respond to smell and touch. I’m doing all that I can to enrich her life. I take her outside and encourage my other pets to interact with her.

How long did it take Gracie to get used to using the Microchip Pet Feeder?

Less than a week. I am thankful to have the feeder for Gracie. It allows her to eat whenever she wants to and protects the food from my other pets.

Did you need to use the training mode for her?

No, I just opened the feeder, and fed her from it for a few days. Then I started closing it and walking her up to it, so that she understood her food was in there. Now she uses the feeder on her own, and I don’t have to wake her up to see that she eats.
